TREAT ALS, or the Translational Research Advancing Therapy for ALS program, was launched in 2005, by the ALS Association. The main goal of this initiative is to speed up new drug developments in the treatment of ALS.
The three main goals of TREAT ALS are:
· Structuring a framework to expedite testing of new drugs.
· Working with academic and biotech institutions involved in treatment.
· Establishing preclinical data leading to drug approval.
TREAT ALS is a joint effort between the ALS Association and the National Institute of Health's National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) Center. Through this partnership NINDS will review between five hundred to one thousand FDA approved drugs in the hope of finding one that can be used as treatment for ALS.
