ALS can be classified with the other motor neuron diseases. It belongs to the same group of diseases such as Poliomyelitis, Spinal Muscular Dystrophy, Botulism, and Tetanus.

These diseases all have the same thing in common – they affect the cells of the anterior part of he spinal cord. From this general classification, ALS can be further divided into three main forms – Sporadic ALS, Familial ALS, and Guamanian ALS.
